Box Score 2 Sioux Center, Iowa - The Comets Softball team traveled to Iowa to take part in the ASB Dome Classic, where they faced two GPAC opponents, the College of Saint Mary Flames and the undefeated #12 Northwestern Raiders.
Coach Olson earned her first win as Comets head coach with a 7-1 victory over the Flames in the opener and managed a split on the day with a 13-0 defeat to the Raiders.
"It felt good to get over the hump of the last first two weekends and get a win. We have been facing some really tough competition so staying focused and bought in is something our team has really tried to focus on. Defensively we were really clean today and offensively I thought our approach in the box was better," said head coach
Jordan Olson.
Game 1 vs. College of Saint Mary:
The Comets opened the game with an offensive outburst.
Mackenzie Iverson singled and moved to second after
Megan Elliott was hit by a pitch.
Lindsay Tulla stepped to the plate and rapped a double into right field which scored Iverson and gave Mayville State runners at second and third.
With the bases full and two out,
Miquela Pino smacked a single to right, which scored both Elliott and Tulla. The Comets finished the inning ahead 3-0.
The middle innings were controlled by the pitchers as
Emily Haines kept the Flames off the scoreboard the first five innings and allowed only two hits in that stretch. However in the bottom of the sixth, a St. Mary's home run sliced the lead to 3-1.Â
The Comets responded in a big way in the top of the seventh. With two runners on, Iverson poked a single into left field, which scored
Madison Terres.
Elliott then followed suit with another single to left which plated
Sam Shumway. The third run was scored on a double steal and
Kennedy Vettel stole second base while Iverson took off for home and scored.
Autumn McGough then singled to bring in Vettel. With four runs and five hits in the inning, the Comets now led 7-1. Haines mowed down the Flames 1-2-3 in the seventh and Mayville State claimed the victory.
Haines went all seven innings and notched her first win allowing one run and racking up five strikeouts. Iverson spurred the offense going 2 for 4 with two runs and a stolen base. Pino added two RBI and Tulla and Shumway finished with doubles.
"Emily once again pitched a great game, however, our bats came alive in big moments when we needed them too. We played clean defense and stuck to our game plan in the box allowing us to stay consistent throughout the game," said Olson.
Game 2 vs. #12 Northwestern:
In the evening game, the Comets battled the ranked Northwestern Raiders. Northwestern jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first off four hits. Elliott singled in the bottom of the first, but the Comets were not able to push her across home plate.
The Raiders opened the floodgates in the second when the Comets struggled to find the strike zone, scoring six runs to bump their lead to 9-0. Northwestern added four runs in the top of the fourth inning to make the score 13-0 and that proved to be the final score.
"We knew Northwestern was going to be a tough team, however, we took ourselves out of the game in the second inning with the walks and hit by pitches. Good teams take advantage of your mistakes and they did just that. We came out wide eyed and didn't rise to the occasion against big competition. Saturday we see two more GPAC teams, I expect our team to get back to what we are about and compete regardless of the talent level of the other team," added Olson.
The split gives the Comets a record of 1-9. Mayville State is back in action on Saturday with two more games at the classic against the Morningside Mustangs and the host Dordt Defenders. First pitch is at 2:00pm.
