Softball Drops 3 in Tucson

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 Tucson, Arizona – The Comets Softball team made their way down to Tucson, Arizona this week for the Tucson Invitational Games following their four-game stint in Wichita, Kansas.

Originally, the Comets were set to continue their road trip via bus, but due to mechanical issues Mayville State was stranded for a couple days before taking a last-minute flight to Tucson from Wichita.

"Shout out to Dickinson State Softball, they shuttled us from the airport to the hotel and to our games the next morning, which honestly made it a lot less stressful than it could have been," said head coach Jordan Olson. "The bus got fixed and made it's way down just in time to take us to our games on Tuesday."

Mayville State was scheduled to play 6 varsity games and 2 JV games in five days, however, travel issues and rain allowed them to only play 3 varsity games and 1 JV.

Tuesday vs. Jamestown – L 5-4

In a rematch from opening weekend, the Jimmies set the tone early, plating 2 runs in the bottom of the first.

But the Comets came right back in the third when Mackenzie Iverson singled to left and back-to-back batters reached on errors. With bases loaded Ryanne Bass singled to left field and scored Iverson.

Miquela Pino then grounded out to shortstop, scoring pinch runner Kate Vigen.

Tied at 2 in the bottom of the 3rd, Jamestown came right back and plated a run on a SAC fly.

In this ping pong match, the Comets answered in the fourth as Megan Elliott scored Kennedy Vettel.

Now tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth, the Jimmies blasted a two-run home run to take the lead 5-2.

Despite stringing together some baserunners in the 7th inning with two outs, the Comets fell 4-5.

Mayville State racked up 12 hits and left 11 runners on base.

Mackenzie Iverson went 1-3 with 1 run, BB
Megan Elliott went 3-4 with 1 run & 1 RBI, 2B
Madison Terres went 2-4, 2B
Ryanne Bass went 2-4 with 2RBI
Kennedy Vettel went 4-4 with 1 run

Emily Haines pitched 6 innings, scattering 8 hits and only 3 earned runs.

Tuesday vs. Graceland – L 10-1

In a quick turnaround, the Comets took on Graceland where walks and errors would inevitably aid in the loss to the Yellow Jackets.

The only run plated for the Comets came in the third inning where Megan Elliott singled to center field scoring Lindsey Tulla.

The fifth and sixth inning would be the deal breaker as the Yellow Jackets would rack up 9 runs. Four of the runs would be scored by wild pitches.

Lindsey Tulla was 1-3 with a run
Megan Elliott was 1-3 with 1 RBI

Graceland's senior pitcher Sammi Bradshaw would only allow 5 scattered hits while striking out 10.

Courtney Boll took to the mound for Mayville State where she pitched 6 innings allowing only 6 hits and striking out 5.

Saturday vs. #14 Northwestern – L 16-1

After three days of no games, the Comets finally got in one last game before heading back north. This time a rematch with No. 14 Northwestern College, who the Comets saw two weeks prior.

The bats were hot for Northwestern as they scored 16 runs on 16 hits.

Mayville State managed to push in a run in the 3rd inning when Mackenzie Iverson grounded out to shortstop, scoring Erika Howell.

Autumn McGough and Erika Howell would have the only two hits allowed by Northwestern.

Emily Haines got the start in the circle, giving up 6 hits and 2 walks.

The Comets would utilize three more pitchers from the bull pen, but the Raiders had no problem adjusting in the box and taking advantage of the 7 walks given up by Mayville State.

"I am disappointed in the last two games we played. To play how we did in Wichita, a full seven innings every game regardless of who our competition was to our performances against Graceland and Northwestern is frustrating," said Olson.

Mayville State picked up a four game series with Mount Marty on the way home, taking on the Lancers Monday & Tuesday in Yankton, South Dakota.

Olson added, "I see glimpses and moments of the team they can be but ultimately we are inconsistent with being competitive. This is something we have been working on as a program since the fall and we have put ourselves in a position where we need to find a way to compete against Mount Marty Monday and Tuesday to prepare use for our conference opener next weekend."
