MAYVILLE, N.D. — Mayville State had their Frontier Conference debut Tuesday night, hosting the Valley City State Vikings in the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse. The Comets started off strong, but a difficult third quarter proved costly as the Comets fell 74–59.

The Comets came out sharp, opening the game on a 7-0 behind early buckets from Laela Jensen & Lynae Walker.Their defense forced Valley City State into tough shots in the first quarter, helping Mayville State take a 12-10 edge after one.

Mayville State held its largest lead of 10 points midway through the second quarter and continued to find success from the perimeter, shooting 41% from behind the arc for the game. But turnovers became an issue, especially as Valley City State turned defensive pressure into transition points. The Comets finished with 27 turnovers which led to 30 Vikings points.

Valley City State took control with a decisive 30-14 third quarter, knocking down five threes and pushing the lead into double digits. Despite a strong fourth-quarter push—including an 8–0 stretch fueled by Whitney Welk and Jensen—the Comets were unable to fully overcome the deficit.

Jensen delivered one of her strongest all-around performances of the season, finishing with 13 points, 3 assists, and 5 rebounds, including a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. Hannah Stark also scored 13 points, adding 2 steals and providing steady scoring throughout.

Walker was a major presence inside, recording 9 rebounds and 6 points, while Welk gave the Comets valuable bench production with 9 points, including a key three-pointer in the fourth.

Mayville State matched VCSU in bench scoring at 22 points and shot efficiently overall at 42%, but the turnover gap and second-chance opportunities swung momentum toward the Vikings.

The Comets will host No. 21 Montana Tech Friday at 5:00pm & Montana Western at 5:00pm Saturday. For full schedule details visit: https://msucomets.com/sports/womens-basketball/schedule
