Women's Basketball Hires Northwestern College Assistant, Dylan Schmit

Mayville, N.D. - Head women's basketball coach, Ryan Carpenter, announced Tuesday the hiring of Dylan Schmit to the coaching staff. Schmit was previously the graduate assistant at Northwestern College after experiences with Minnesota State University Moorhead and the University of South Dakota.

"We are thrilled to welcome Coach Schmit to the Comet family. His extensive experience at the University of South Dakota, Minnesota State University – Moorhead, and Northwestern College speaks volumes about his knowledge of the game, his adaptability, and his dedication to the growth of student-athletes both on and off the court," commented head coach Ryan Carpenter.

A 2023 USD graduate with a degree in sports management, Schmit spent time on the Coyotes' women's basketball scout team, was a ticket sales representative in the athletic office, and was an intern for the women's basketball coaching staff.

Following his stint at USD, Schmit spent a season with the Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball program as a graduate assistant, serving as their Director of Operations. Schmit, originally from Osmond, Nebraska, will join the Comets in June.

"What truly sets him apart is his passion for recruiting and player development—two pillars that are vital to the continued success and culture of our women's basketball program. His ability to identify talent, build meaningful relationships, and help young women reach their full potential aligns perfectly with the values and vision of our team. We're confident that his energy, work ethic, and commitment will make a lasting impact on our program and community for years to come," added Carpenter.

In addition to adding a new coach to the staff, Coach Carpenter will be adding a lot of new faces to the court.

"We currently have 17 new athletes coming in for next year, 15 freshman and 2 junior college transfers. We are still hoping to add a few more late additions before we report back to campus in the fall," said Carpenter.

The Comets 2025-26 schedule has not been released, however, they will open up the season on the road October 24th & 25th taking on Hastings & Grand View. As of now, the first home game for the Comets is scheduled for November 7th against Minot, however, Carpenter is still working on finalizing the schedule.
