Game Recap: Softball | | Jordan Olson, SID

Blue Hawks sweep Comets in Dickinson

Dickinson, N.D. - The Mayville State Unviersity Comets Softball team headed to Dickinson State University Saturday & Sunday to take on the Blue Hawks for a series that was originally slated for home. The Blue Hawks' offense would be hot and their pitching would hold the Comets to just 5 runs on the entire weekend.

"When you leave 24 runners on base over the weekend, strike out 33 times and give up 38 runs, you're not going to win ball games. We went into these games with a plan at the plate and didn't come close to executing that plan. We really struggled to getting the 3rd out all weekend without causing any damage," said a frustrated head coach Jordan Olson. "Next week doesn't get any easier seeing Bellevue on the road. We really need to simplify some things this week if we want to compete next weekend and the remainder of April."

Game 1: L 0-5
- Blue Hawks plate 3 runs in the top of the first after they lead the game off with a HBP & follow it up with back to back errors to load the bases
- Dickinson adds another run in the top of the 2nd with a two out single
- Both teams really settle in defensively and in the circle as things were quiet until the top of the 5th where Dickinson pushed another run making it 5-0
- The Comets couldn't muster up any rhythm in the box, having just 2 hits in the game
- Lacey Mathiowetz had 9 strike outs

Game 2: L 4-16
- The Comets would give up back to back home runs in the top of the 1st to give Dickinson an early 2-0 lead
- The Blue Hawks plated 5 more runs in the top of the 2nd, all with 2 outs, extending their lead 7-0
- A single, hit by pitch and walk would load the bases early for the Comets in the bottom of the 2nd
- Mackenzie Hughes roped a double scoring 2, cutting their deficit to 5
- In the top of the 3rd, the Comets couldn't keep the Blue Hawks off the base path, giving up 8 runs on 7 hits - 7 runs would come with 2 outs
- Dickinson State plates another run, making it 16-2 in the 4th
- Hughes leads the bottom of the 4th off with a double, followed up with a double from Autumn McGough
- Madison Terres hits a single and Mackenzie Fuxa doubles putting the score 16-4
- The Comets couldn't do much more and would fall in game two

Game 3: L 1-10
- Dickinson State would score in all 5 innings of the game
- The Blue Hawks got out to an early 3-0 lead in the first after a single, double and home run
- Back to back doubles by Lindsey Tulla and McGough would plate a run to make it a 3-1 ball game
- The Comets wouldn't be able to get anything going offensively and Dickinson State would put that hammer down each inning

Game 4: L 0-7
- A lead off triple in the top of the first put the Blue Hawks in scoring position early
- A SAC fly, a single, a double and another single plated 3 runs to get the Blue Hawks up 3-0 early
- Dickinson State kept at it, scoring 1 run in the 3rd and 3 more in the 5th to make it 7-0
- Mayville State would combine for just 3 hits, falling 0-7

The Comets fall to 0-8 in NSAA play after the first two weekends. They will be back on the road once again next weekend, this time heading to Bellevue to take on the Bruins on Saturday & Sunday.
