Mayville, N.D. - Mayville State Comets assistant football coach, Kyle Otineru, will depart Mayville State at the end of May after accepting a job at Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids, Iowa with their new football program.

Otineru spent the last four season with the Comets where he worked with the offensive line and was the run game coordinator - he will do the same at Mount Mercy. Otineru was also the main out of state recruiter for Comet Football and was an instructor in the HPER department at Mayville State.

"Kyle has been a staple part of our coaching staff the last four years. He has been a big part of the turn around on the field and in the classroom. He did an outstanding job in helping change the culture at MSU," said head football coach Rocky Larson.

"I would like to thank Coach Larson and the rest of the Mayville State Comet Family for a great four years!  This experience has be so wonderful to both myself and my family. I am a firm believer in 'leaving it better than you found it,' and truly take pride in what we have built and the direction that the program is headed," commented Otineru. "While it saddens me that my time as a Comet has come to an end, I will cherish the relationships I have made here and look forward to the next chapter in my coaching journey."

Prior to Mayville State, Otineru spent the 2020 season as the Assistant Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator at Moanalua High School in Honolulu, Hawaii. Before that, he spent 3 seasons as the Offensive Line Coach and Run Game Coordinator at Southern Oregon University in Ashland, Oregon.

"I want to thank Kyle and Val for believing in Mayville State and being a key contributor the past four years. Kyle is like a brother to me and we will miss him here," said Larson. "I look forward to following his career and continuing our friendship. We will miss the entire Otineru family. I wish him the best of luck in the next step of his career!"
