The 1993 Mayville State University baseball team broke the record (at the time) for most wins in a single season. They did this while overcoming the difficulty of learning that head coach Scott Berry’s wife Laurie had been diagnosed with cancer. The team took it upon themselves to use this as motivation to work hard while their coach tended to the needs of his wife.
Three players on the 1993 team earned All-American status, and numerous players were named to the all-conference, all-district, and all-region teams. Several players on this team won conference and district titles during their years at Mayville State. The team had much talent, persevered, and played for something much bigger than all of them. Their overall record was 34-14, and their conference record was 11-1. They were one game away from qualifying for the NAIA World Series.
Members of the team were: Paul Olson, Kyle Nelson, Ron Epp, Clay Morse, Brent Kohls, Kelley Kessler, Ron Reilkoff, Troy Bauer, Darryl Bruce, Blair Babyck, Jason Mateychuk, Rob McDonnell, Joe Eisenmann, Dave Sim, Cory Ploeger, Dean Berry, Darin Everson, Dave Nychyk, Kevin Johnson, Craig Brand, Tony Wischnack, Jason Wandler, Kerry Fernholz, Mark Larson, and Shandi Toker. Head coach was Scott Berry. Assistant coaches were Art Penning and Randy LeBleu.
