Janna Hjelseth was a four-year starter and letter winner in basketball and softball, playing at Mayville State from 1973 to 1977. She received the Most Valuable Player Award in both sports in 1977, and was also captain for both teams in that same year. She played on the 1976 fastpitch softball team that defeated NDSU twice in double-elimination at the state tournament and advanced to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb. Hjelseth also participated in volleyball in 1975 and in indoor track in 1976, lettering in both sports. In 1975, her volleyball team took second place in the state tournament and advanced to the Region VI tournament in Kearney, Neb. Hjelseth earned a bachelor’s degree from Mayville State in 1977, majoring in physical education and earning minors in health and art.
