Hall of Fame
Donna (Johnson) Hutchison was named MVP and lettered in volleyball, basketball, and track at Mayville State in 1971-72. She also lettered in volleyball in 1973-74. She was a national qualifier in track in the high jump and long jump in 1971-72.
Because of a lack of institutional funds, she decided that Mayville State should send five members of the track team to the regional track meet in Wichita, Kansas instead of sending just herself to the nationals. Hutchison took first place in the long jump and second place in the high jump at the regional track meet. She also competed in the spring relay and the hurdles at the regional meet.
She held high jump records at Concordia in Moorhead, Minn., and at Mayville State. Hutchison played on the 1973-74 Mayville State volleyball team that placed second in the Minn-Kota Conference and third in the state tournament.
Hutchison graduated in 1975 from Mayville State with majors in business education and physical education. She earned her masters from St. Thomas University.
Donna resides in Grand Forks, N.D., where she has been a teacher and a coach for 32 years. She resigned her position as head girls track coach at Grand Forks (N.D.) Red River High School after the 2007 season. She had held the position for 11 seasons, a span in which she led the Roughriders to state championships in 1998 and 2000. She earned many coaching honors as well during that time. She is active in the North Dakota Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, and is a volleyball official at the high school and college level.
