Box Score 4 Portland, N.D. - Mayville State Comets Softball wrapped up their regular season play this past weekend against Valley City State. The teams played two games at Valley and two games in Portland. The Comets split with the Vikings on the road, but at home they couldn't keep up with the Vikings offense.
"Friday really showed us all the progress we have made throughout the season as a team. To go on the road to play a tough rival team and get the split was a what I thought would be a confidence booster. Autumn pitched a really good game and our offense and defense played behind her, we need more of that though," said head coach
Jordan Olson. "I figured going into Saturday's games we would have some momentum and for the most part of the first game we did, but we couldn't finish late."
Game 1: L 3-8
- Comets score early, pushing 2 runs in the top of the 1st when
Mackenzie Hughes hit a double and
Lindsey Tulla hit a home run to centerfield
- Vikings have a big inning in the bottom of the 3rd, scoring 6 runs on 3 hits, the the Comets didn't commit an error, they did walk to and hit another; 6-2 Vikings
- The Vikings draw a lead off walk in the bottom of the th and are able to score her later with a SAC fly, extending their lead 7-2

Nevaeh Stinson are hit by pitches back to back in the top of the 6th, followed by back to back walks by
Antarez Sierra and Hughes, plating a run making it 7-3
- Valley City smokes a triple with two outs in the bottom of the 6th, extending their lead 8-3
- The Comets couldn't put anything together and fell 8-3
Game 2: W 5-4
- Comets get on the board first after
Lacey Mathiowetz singles to centerfield followed by a RBI double by Tulla
- In the top of the 3rd, Hughes leads it off with a bunt single followed up with a stolen base
- Tulla singles to centerfield, her 100th career hit which scores Hughes to extend the Comets lead 2-0
- Top of the 5th, Hughes draws a lead off walk and the the Vikings commit back to back errors the Comets plate one run
- With Mathiowetz at third,
Madison Terres scores her off a squeeze bunt to make it 4-0 Comets
- The Vikings battle back in the bottom of the 5th, scoring 4 runs on 4 hits to tie the game
- Bass leads the top of the 6th off with a single to center field, followed by a pinch hit single by
Kate Vigen
- With 2 outs, Hughes hits a chopper over the third baseman, scoring pinch runner, Hailey Padgett as the Comets regain the lead 5-4
- The Vikings lead off the bottom of the 7th with a ground ball to short, but a Comet error would put the runner at 1st
- The Vkings would take 3rd on a sac bunt putting the tying run at 3rd with just 1 out
- With arguably one of the best hitters in the Vikings line up up to bat, Autumn Mcgough gets a pop out to second base followed up with a backwards K to seal the 5-4 victory
Game 3: L 7-11
- Vikings lead the game off with back to back singles and a 3 run home run to take an early lead 3-0
- Comets respond with back to back 2 out moon shots over centerfield by Tulla and Terres making it 3-2
- Mayville State ties it up with a SAC fly by Hughes in the bottom of the 2nd
- The Vikings find a way to plate one run on 2 its to take the lead 4-3 in the top of the 3rd
- In this back to back battle, the Comets are able to plate 3 runs on 3 hits in the bottom of the 3rd, taking the lead 6-4
- Valley City has an explosive inning, scoring 4 runs on 3 hits - the Comets commit 2 errors, Vikings up 8-6 heading into the bottom of the 4th
- Bass leads the inning off with her first collegiate home run, making it a one run ball game 8-7 Vikings on top
- Comets can't muster anything up late in the game & the Vikings plate another 3 runs in the top of the 7th to take the 11-7 win over the Comets
Game 4: L 5-17
- Vikings start things off hot, scoring 7 runs off of 6 hits in the top of the 1st
- Hughes draws a walk to lead off the bottom 1st, and Tulla later drives her in the make it 7-1
- Valley City's offense doesn't lighten up, scoring another 2 runs in the top of the 2nd, extending their lead 9-1
- The Comets find some momentum, scoring 3 runs on 3 hits to make it a 9-4 game heading into the top third
- Vikings tack on 4 more in the top of the 4th and another 4 runs in the top of the 5th
- Mathiowetz gets to first on a Vikings error to lead off the bottom of the 5th
- Terres smokes a double down the left field line to score Mathiowetz but that would be all the Comets could put together and fall 5-17
"Overall, this series showed a lot of good things. We had some players step up in big moments against good pitchers, we executed some small ball plays to put pressure on and we put the ball in play well," said Olson. "Heading into tournament, we just need to take it one pitch, one at bat and one inning at a time. Our plan is to go out against Valley just like we did Friday and compete hard. That's all you can do in post season, because anyone can beat anyone at tournament."
The Comets enter the NSAA tournament as the no. 5 seed, getting a quick rematch with Valley City State on Thursday, May 1st. The first pitch is slated for 2:00pm (CT). For full tournament details visit:
